I'm not sure if your FB air inlet is like the one below.... If it is, raise you fire grate to just below the center bolt.... add an additional "damper" like in the picture... That will allow you to adjust the air to the fire and adjust the additional air flow for regulating air temps in the CC and adjust the air flow through the CC.... Ski Freak did this mod and really liked the control he got...

Sealing up the air leaks on the doors is a must do for good control...



 
That is the Pecos model. I have one myself. 

You can get some nomex gasket from bbqgaskets.com, I went with the 1/2" x 1/8" thick and put it on the door of both the cook chamber and the firebox. The 15ft is just the right amount. It helps some, there's still some leakage, but it's better. You might have to go thicker if you have some big gaps with the door fit.

I still can't really understand why people mistreat and neglect things like this. Oh well, make it a fun project, grind her down and repaint her and she'll look better than new.
