Just wondering what you all are paying for bacon now a days.

About 2 months ago I could get 4lbs of thick cut apple wood smoked bacon for 12.99. Went recently and its now 19.99.

Thats one huge jump in price. Its damn good bacon but DAMN!!!!!

What say you?

Brian, morning...... Our Safeway has their bacon, which is good, 3#'s $14.99..... Same as your area.... Soooo, bellies for $2.70 and me doing the rest, is a good deal...

That's exactly what I was thinking but bellies have gone up too.

I'm going to have to get to searching for some good cheap bellies

Thats what I am going to do Dave. Last time I prices the whole foods was over $4 a lb and the place I got them at a decent price they were very thin and not good quality bellies.

I made a UDS today for my first smoke ever.  The price of bacon is what started me looking for a different way to keep bacon in the house.   We set a limit of $4.00 lb for bacon in the grocery an as you can imagine we don't eat much bacon anymore.   A local meat store will sell pork bellies for 4.19 lb and I might try to smoke my own.  I really am enjoying this forum and hope to use it to learn about smoking meat.  Next Saturday will be my first smoke and it will be spare ribs.

Bacon is out the roof here?

Even for the garbage stuff.

Local regional chain had applewood or pepper bacon on sale at 2.99!

I prefer thin sliced but this was thick sliced out of the meat counter.

I stocked up.  Used a lot of Lisa's rolls.  Sealed it up and in my freezer!

Now if Lisa would just give me an extra special discount?

Good luck and good smoking.

I haven't checked here , I figured it wouldn't matter anyhow

I think she might !!!!!!!

I bought good ole Oscar Meyer thin sliced the other day at the store and it ran ~$6 for a lb.   I was shocked, it had been awhile since i picked up bacon for anything and i was blown away at the price.  There wasn't anything on sale and it was all in this price range.  I hope this trend goes back down or i'm going to have to figure out how to make it myself :)

In other news the bacon wrapped, pepper jack stuffed jalapenos i smoked that afternoon turned out great.

I was at a grocery over the weekend and noticed they had in house smoked bacon for $3.99 a lb thick cut. This stuff looked really nice. They also sell the bellies for $2.99 a lb. I'll be picking up a few lbs likely and giving making my own bacon a go very soon!

I guess we can all look up on the net why the bacon prices are high, but I do know one of the reasons among a few is supply and demand on this pork item.  One thing I have done is stock up on bacon due to sales.  I must have at least 20 one pound packs left due to coupon sales here over time.  Those were 2 packs of one pounders for 6 pounds or coupons for under 4 bucks a pack.  Those were brand names like Hormel or Oscar Meyer.  Our store here still has a end cap full of off brand bacon for 2.99 per 16 oz pack with no limit.  Got a few but not very meaty but hey, it's bacon.  I can also get a 3 pound bag of frozen bacon ends for 5.99.  Those had as much meat as the brand name.  So look for sales and stock up when you can.  The brand name bacon not on sale goes from 4.99 to 6.49 a pound normally here.  The 4.99 was for the "store name" bacon which is just as good as the brand names and most likely made for the store by one of the brand names.  Reinhard

Good point!

Ends and pieces are perfectly good bacon for many applications.

And at a discount price.

We use them a lot.

But for a plate of eggs or a BLT.....

Nothing is quite as purdy?

Good luck and good smoking.

But you are a butcher...... I love the fact how they change things for us stupid consumers. Most of the bacon sold here (the cheap stuff) if sold by package. The better bacon is sold by the pound, the cheap stuff is 12 oz. packages. We are not supposed to notice it or not be intelligent to translate 12 oz. prices to 1 lb prices. LOL

BTW local sub-par bacon is selling  2 each 12 oz packages for 5.00.  ( thats 3.33 a lb). Doh! Of course thats the really good bacon. Yuckie poo-poo!

Yes I can by truckload quanties of bacon this week for only 3.33/lb., but packages will be 3/4 lb. packages.

pork prices are starting to drop, just from last week butt's went from 2.10 A POUND to 1.75 this week, boneless loins from 2.18 to 1.89 asked my supplier about bellies they were around 3.20 now around 2.60 he said, hopefully the trend downward will continue.

Monday, I was pressed into service at the last minute to make some appetizers for a friends bbq. I decided on Chicken Sticks, but needed bacon to wrap them. So I asked the wife to pick me up 2 packages. She came back with 2 Oscar Meyer packs that she pulled from the clearance shelf. They were 50% off, but the "normal" price was stamped $9.99! So that's still $5 lb, and that's why I rarely buy bacon anymore.

On a related note, I notice Restaurant Depot has skinless bellies for $2.39 lb by the 30 lb case, thru Sept. 15th. Think I will stock up for smoking later.

WOW.... Great price.... I'd stock up too....

I am not ready to declare a market trend yet, but........?

Last week, they had the bulk bacon at 2.99 on sale.  Nearly half price of the packaged garbage.

This week they have whole pork loins on sale at 1.99.

Hopefully Home Depot has a sale?

I need a second freezer!

Good luck and good smoking.
