You have a great boat designer/builder named Johns Welsford in your neck of the woods. Here's one of his designs that a local Oregonian built. One if my favorite designs ever.
Lot of boat building back in the day, suppose you get that when you live on the worlds largest Island
Welsford is from NZ they have a lot of skills that they have hung onto despite modern plastics etc.
Way back about 1830? a group of Moari men built a sailing boat in a European style just from eyeballing English ships .They then filled it full of things to trade & sailed it to Sydney.
It caused great consternation because it wasnt "flagged" as in a particular countries ship. It got impounded but they eventually relented let them trade but asked them not to do it again. If they knew how many guns they went back to NZ with they might have rethought it.
Moari wars were called a draw by the English ,signed a treaty. An indigenous people who were never going to give in to white rule. We have to play NZ in rugby tomorrow.
A friend of mines ancestor was the captain of the ship & ultimately a signatory to the treaty.
