Smokey Sauce

What is the best way to add smoke to a bbq sauce? I don't really like the taste of liquid smoke so looking for other options. Would it be possible to cold smoke a bbq sauce in a foil pan? I also understand some folks use drippings, I assume this decreases shelf life?

Smoked paprika or chipotle. Chipotle could be any form, I canned in adobo sauce, while dried or powder.
