Thanks for the idea! I didn't succeed in bite through skin on all them only 1 of them had it but I attest that to me pulling back the skin to place my rub directly on the meat. Made it taste so good! They cooked little quicker than I expected but even though they got done faster I basted them with the extra butter and some bbq sauce...

I'm gonna try some chicken breasts done this way next and see how they turn out.

From the pic it looks like the chicken was skin side up and not submerged in the butter. The skin needs to be IN the fat for it to do the most good. Try flipping them over next time so the skin side's down.
 
I use a weber charcoal basket in my kettle. This allows a lot of room for what you are smoking and when you get close to the finish stage of your smoke you can move what you are smoking right above the basket and crisp it up!

I've done fatties, chicken, char siu, Hawaiian style smoke meat and ribs this way.
