I have always cooked on briquettes. Have propane grill that I really did not like to cook on so it sat in the yard unused for some time. Dirt dobbers stopped it up so I use it as a smoker. Seemed to work well for a small piece of meat.

Thanks guys. I have a son-in-law that smokes on a big smoker when they have a get together. It may take him all night and day to get the meat done but when it is done it is great. Here at home it is just hubby and me so small cuts of meat work well for us. I think I need to fashion a larger fire box so I do not have to feed it every few min to keep the smoker going. We live just Southeast of Austin Tx and have an abundance of mesquite both dry and green. I have taken mesquite beans and boiled down a marinade to some the meat in as well as put the beans on the smoker. Even hamburger in the marinade for just a few min gives a good flavor.
