Hey all, I've been wanting to build a smoker for years but time and money all ways seemed to get in the way. Went garage selling with the wife and bought what I now think to be an air compressor tank that was hacked into a grill. I thought it was a lp tank, but now believe it's a 80 gal. compressor tank. Hope there's enough meat left to weld to after derusting it. I was a plumbing contractor for over 26 years when I had my 3rd stroke, that one took me out of the game now. As for metal skills, I cut my teeth welding in high school. The "right of passage" oxy-acetylene and stick was available then. Have a mig and plasma now, sold my tig a few years ago. This is a great site and will be frequenting it often.

Hello and Welcome to our addiction.  A word of warning: There is no 12 step program for this one!  Many good folk here with a load of experience that they are more than willing to share.  If you have specific questions just start a thread and someone with experience will be along soon to offer advice.  All info you can provide us with such as smoker type, location and so on will help us answer any questions you may have.  Spend some time doing some research on the forums, tons of advice and recipes already available there.  We look forward to your ontributions.  Have fun.  Good luck.  Keep Smokin!

Welcome to the SMF family, pugnacious. Check out out build forum here and see what others have done with air tanks. Maybe you'll find some ideas there that will help.

Share you build with us in the Build Forums-we like seeing new smokers come to life!

Enjoy the Smoke!

I used to live in Cocoa years ago. Worked at Jones Machine Shop on M.I.. Used to eat at Little Venice and Frankie's all the time.

Thanks all for the warm welcomes. I love this site with all the info and people. I don't wish to put my project here, later I'll post with pics and such in the project section. It will be a budget build with scraps. Ale, Jones is about a mile away from me. As for Frankies, the original restaurant at the port, they went down hill with drug busts and management issues years ago and no longer are at the port, miss those wings! As for little Venice, the original owners sold it and the new owners killed it. My mom was friends with John and his wife. Again, thanks for the warm welcome guys.

Brooksy, I don't bother with the lagoon anymore, in fact I haven't dipped a boat in over 2 years. When the urge hits me I put on old sneakers and drive to a spot and wade out with an ugly stick laced with a jig head and twister body (chartreuse). 90% of the time I'll score a legal red within an hour. As for the trout, you can keep them. I use to give them to friends but I won't waste my time with them anymore. I just don't like fish meat with no body, all squish. Hawthorne, is that by Cedar Key on the west side? I did a house over there for a clammer, neat place.

I'm about an hour and a half from cedar key. Fun place reminds me of the keys. Lived in big pine for a couple of years. I haven't been in the lagoon for quite some time. Mostly st johns and lake cruising lately.

Pugnacious welcome to SMF!

I see you live in my old stomping grounds. My parents still live there, I moved away about 23 years ago.

Hey JarJar, thanks for the welcome. You moved to O-Town? I intend to move out of here as well some day. Bought 40 acres in the panhandle complete with my own cypress pond/lake.

I am south of O Town. I wish I could go back to the area. But job, kids, wife,............ I try to go back when I can, but seems to get further and further apart....... I so miss the Banana River first thing in the morning. My favorite thing is running the boat in morning when the water is glassy, the sun coming up and the wild life coming alive.......

Agreed Jar, the morning (witching hour) 1/2 hr before light and an hr after is the best for me followed with the last 2 hr's of the day. I won't bother during the day when it's hot, they'll be "holed up" in deep pockets then. As for Brevard, it's getting busier and busier here. Just too many idiots, pretty much the reason I left Miami 30 years ago. Hell, the port is starting to look like Disney. I'll be starting a post in the builders (reverse flow) section later today maybe. I'll title it smoker rescue, which is pretty much what I'm doing. Rescuing a poorly designed and built grill I scored for 20-25 (can't remember) while garage selling with the wife.
