I've been lingering in these forums for a few weeks and now I'm building my first offset smoker. I'm having a hard time deciding how I should make my door to the firebox. I'm thinking of welding the front plate on and cutting the door out. Or what it be better to frame the door in angle iron and make the whole front swing open? Does anybody have any suggestions? Also, would a sliding vent 4 x 7" long be okay for the intake, or should I make two smaller openings? The cooking chamber is a 24" x 48" air compressor tank. I used Feldon's BBQ calculator to determine the size of my firebox and chimney. If it wasn't for this website and all the nice people here, I would have never attempted this project.

Hello and Welcome to the site, I'd say the door should be your personal preference, Look through some of the builds and see what you may like.  Ask Dave O, about the sizing and placement of your vents, he is a very knowledgeable and helpful guy.

That's a great build Lyall...nice skills, Brother! Can't wait to see some shots of it in action (maybe some ribs this Saturday?).

Hey Lyall, looks great. You did a super nice job. Let me say, It's always fun to smoke and turn out great food for family and friends, But nothing like turning out great food on a smoker you built. I used to get asked all the time Where I got my smoker, always made me feel good when I explained that Me and my #2 son built it. Again Great Job. Now lets see some meat on that thing.

I just finished my first smoke! Thanks to Red for all the help with my ribs.  I wrapped one rack with brown sugar, honey and butter. The other rack I just wrapped with apple juice.  Both racks turned out great.  I wrapped the CSR's the same way, they are falling of the bone tender!

Those look outstanding Lyall! Great color...looks like they were delicious! Nice job of breaking in that smoker. Thumbs Up
