I am new to this site, and I cannot figure out how to post to a thread. I am logged in as a member but all I can see, is the ability to read postings, but can't find where or how to post?

Hello and Welcome to our addiction.  A word of warning: There is no 12 step program for this one!  Many good folk here with a load of experience that they are more than willing to share.  If you have specific questions just start a thread and someone with experience will be along soon to offer advice.  All info you can provide us with such as smoker type, location and so on will help us answer any questions you may have.  Spend some time doing some research on the forums, tons of advice and recipes already available there.  I see knifebld has got you sorted.  If you need more help you can PM me anytime ( "how do I do that";  "hover" your mouse cursor on a member name and a drop down menu appears, you can read their profile to see who they are, send them a PM and other options ).  We look forward to your contributions.  Have fun.  Good luck.  Keep Smokin!

In other words, the "Start A New Thread" is the actual posting?
No, that's how you start a new thread, which you've obviously figured out since you started this thread. To reply to a thread you can do one of two things.

Either click the brown button that says "post a reply"

Or scroll down a little further and just type in the reply box as in the bottom of this pic.

LOL He's already replied once so you gotta figure he knows how to do that too!

Oh, if I am to expect the LOL's and DUH!! comments, maybe this is the wrong group to belong to.
Be patient my friend, be patient.  If you like smoked meat and all kinds of other goodies, you ARE in the right group.  Expect some ribbing on any group, if you can't have some fun doing it, it probably ain't worth doing.

Everything these guys said is true, just hit the reply button or scroll to the bottom of a page to type a "quick reply".  The quick reply limits what you can do, like add pictures and stuff.  Now, I believe it might take a day or two for the moderator to release all things to you, I'm not certain about that but I seem to remember that from when I joined, so it's possible you cannot reply right away.  I could be wrong, so I would suggest contacting a moderator or reading the FAQs to find out if the issue is only related to you and you do need help.

Believe me, this is a great place, lots to learn and really great people.

Or ................. did I just get busted as part of a late April Fool's joke?

Welcome mwmillward!  Glad you've joined the SMF family.  I am assuming that since you've both started a thread, and now posted replies in this thread, that you've figured out the answer to your original question.

Please don't take offense at the guys' friendly kidding around...I'm positive they weren't trying to joke at your expense.  Once you get to know these guys you'll see they're great folks.  You won't find a more friendly forum on the 'net than this one.

Happy smoking!

Hello.  We are glad to have you and will help in any way we can.  frog has you sorted.  We Do try to have a little fun while we are on the forum.  Smoking is not scientific ( except when talking brining, curing and food safety ) and there are many ideas of how it "should" be done.  The advice you will receive here is bar none head and shoulders above ANYTHING you will get elsewhere.  We don't poke fun at new folks or try to belittle anyone (although an innocent funny comment might be included in the advice given ).  This is NOT an elitist site like some others.  Our members TRULY enjoy helping new folks.  We genuinely want to share what we have learned.  Please allow that some of us have been here for a time and have gotten to know other members.  So that if I poke a little fun at Mdboatbum because he missed a point and he gives as good as he gets, it has no bearing on our advice to you AND is certainly NOT directed at you.  Soon you will get to know some of the VERY friendly folks and you will also be exchanging jibes.  We look forward to your contributions ( and jibes ).

So, you posted a new thread, asking how to post a new thread! I think you'll do fine.

Welcome to the forum.

We're just funnin' with ya. It's all good.

Looks like you're up to speed! The DUH comment was directed at myself, as I'd missed the fact that you'd not only started the thread and replied to it. As has been stated, we do like to have fun here as well as exchange information. In addition to a great place to build a smoking and cooking knowledge base, this is one of the friendliest and least combative forums on the web. The moderators and members go to great lengths to keep it friendly, family friendly and spam free.

Give it a while and get to know some folks and I think you'll enjoy being a part of it.
