Hello,

My name is Marek, live in Vancouver BC, Canada. Building my first UDS, have some technical questions for the experts.

1. Using a 55 gal steel drum - food grade. I sandblasted the inside and outside, clean metal. Im going to be painting the outside with BBQ grade paint. How do I season the inside of the drum? Oil? PAM? Grease?

2. Also, building my charcoal basket. I don't have welder I was thinking about using metal enamel pot used for canning it's 14 inches in diameter, I though I could drill some holes in to is to allow for air flow and let ash fall through, any thoughts? An alternative  to the metal enamel pot could be an aluminium deep colander with large holes already made also 14 inches in diameter , would this material work or would the charcoal melt the amluminum?

Thanks for the welcome and feedback.

Marek

I used flaxseed oil on the inside to season.

I would use some type of oil over a spray. Then cook something fatty.

Aluminum and the canner pot I don't think will work. Not heavy enough, but I could be wrong.

Good morning and welcome, Everyone has their favorite method and type of seasoning, don't know if mine is any better than Pam, regular cooking oil, or flax seed oil, but here is what we do. Render down some bacon or bacon ends mix with a good cooking oil, put in a spray bottle and coat everything on the inside. Fire it up get it up to 350 or so spray it again let it go for a while (we just let it burn down. and then you are ready to go. Don't know if the bacon grease really adds anything, but it smells really grate We also will take the rest of the bacon ends and put them on the racks after the first spraying and let them cook, (just helps with a little extra grease and flavor)

You can make a no weld expanded metal charcoal basket with wire ties, tall bolts/washers/nuts easily. Just need a piece of expanded metal, a charcoal grate, 4 bolts, 8 washers, and 8 nuts. No galvanized metals!!!!!

If you cut expanded metal right you can interlock the ends and fold them in on themself, but would have to be a square. You can get really creative and make a octagon basket the same way
