Can a stock thermometer be off by alot

So I seasoned my new smoker(GOSM Gasser) and I noticed that the stock thermometer was about 100 degrees higher then the one I bought from The Depot. I did put the one from the store in boiling water to make sure it was accurate and it was within a degree or two.  So can the stock one be this much off?

Yes it can the one on one of my GOSM's is about 90 degrees off

Never had it happen that drastically, but sure someone has.

Hold it in your clinched fist and see if it gets up to 95 degrees or so.  If it's on at body temp and on at boiling water temp, then it's probably pretty close.

Just bought an ABS all star smoker.  the probe it came with is 50 to 75 degrees lower than my maverick 733 probes placed in close proximity of each other.  I tested both in boiling water and both were spot on but when in the smoker I have the difference.  the manufacture told me to rely on the digitals because they are more accurate.

Stock therms can be that far off.

Also placement of the therm can be a problem.

On my offset the stock therm in the lid will read 175 when the actual temp at meat level will be 240-250 as measured by different wired probes.

I would never trust any therm in a door or lid without measuring the temp at meat level with a couple of wired probes.

Most probe and dial thermometers can be calibrated. Where the probe goes into the back of the dial usually looks like a nut. Hold the dial and turn the nut (or vice versa) to rotate the needle where it should be.
