I cold smoked a few things in my mini with my homemade tube smoker and noticed the same, about a 20-25 degree rise over ambient temp. I think I remember reading that the original Amazn smoker using dust puts out less heat, so maybe as the weather warms that might be the way to go. I like the frozen water bottle idea too.
It does put out less heat.  I will try it too.

I have the dust smoker, pellet smoker, 6 in. tube and 12 in. tube.

Adam,

I have since moved on from the original just putting the tube in the smoker. I now use my mailbox that I set up for the tube.

I use an adapter on the end of the tube that I made from a 3" pvc cap, and a threaded coupler. that screws into the side vent. Never gets hot so wasn't concerned with the pvc. I am working on an adapter for hot smokes for the UDS and the GOSM. I'll post the adapter when I get home.

I have thought about doing something like this for the uds to hot smoke.

Well I tried the dust smoker tonight.

I think I like it better.  The tube put out tons of smoke.  The dust seems like a better smoke.

Hardly see the smoke.

Looks great inside.

Still doing dry runs.

I will now and ALWAYS say that a smaller hotter fire puts out the best smoke.  The dust in the AMPS is a smaller hotter fire in relation to the pellets in the tube....not talking about the volume of smoke but the quality of the smoke.

Perfect sense. Also my chainsaw dust which is more course than the dust puts out a whiter smoke.

I wouldn't use the chipping a from my chain saw! I don't know about yours but mine leaves a bunch of chain oil on the wood. Not to mention tamarack pine and juniper makes horrible flavored smoke, lol!

I can't see oil in the chips thou. Oil should make it dark. I haven't used it on food yet.

I have seen people use veggie oil in the saw.
