Hello All,

Joined the forum today from snowy New Hampshire. I am diving into the world of smoking meat this year. Up until now I have used my grill and make shift smoke boxes to cook ribs, wings, etc. Very eager and excited to start using my MES 40 inch smoker (once the weather will cooperate).

Lots of questions, but the first I have is regarding the placement of my smoker. I have a deck that is somewhat crowded with my patio set and my gas grill. I think setting the smoker up there may be too congested - and dangerous as someone could accidentally touch the smoker and get burned.

Does anyone position their smoker in the yard? Is this a fire hazard? I could position it in the driveway, but I would rather be able to sit in my back yard and hang out near the smoker. Should I purchase a stand to put the smoker on? Will this make it ok to position the unit in the yard? Are extension cords ok to use?

Thanks a lot for any advice.

Welcome to the SMF family, Cold Hands!  We're glad you joined us.

Your MES is insulated, and should not get hot enough on exterior surfaces to burn anyone who touches it (one exception: if it's the model with the window, the glass does get pretty hot, but not really dangerously so).  I used to set mine up on the porch right outside my door.  You should be able to safely place it wherever you like without worrying about it being a fire hazard.  And you need to consider placing it near electrical outlets...many longer extension cords will affect your smoker's performance.

Welcome over here. I would place something not flammable under it just in case an errant ember happens to fall out accidentally. They sell fireproof mat things at Home Depot designed to set under such gizmos. Layer of bricks should also work. Best of fortunes.

I can post with experience that if you put it on your deck/porch near a door, the smell will starve you half to death. every time some one comes over they comment on how great the smoker smell is,,,,even when im not smoking. really bad if your on a diet!!!
