No, I usually try to do both BBQ.  You inject to get some flavor and liquid running through the meat.  As it cooks it helps the meat become incredibly tender.  Some people inject others don't.  Either way there is nothing wrong with doing on or the other, or both.  It all comes down to what works the best for you.  I am fairly new to smoking as well, going on my 3rd year and I wouldn't be where I'm at right now if it wasn't for the fine folks on this forum.  If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask.  My first 10 butts that I smoked I would open the smoker every hour and spray them down.  It helps with bark formation.  I wanted to try something different this time being that I have a brand new smoker.  So I just placed a heat deflector with drip pan directly underneath the meat.  Added some flavor to the water and only opened the lid twice in 9 hours.  The results were some of the best pork I have done without doubt.  You just gotta take some notes of what different folks are doing.  Try a few out and when you have the end product that satisfies you and your family, you've found a winner!  Happy smokin' to ya

Your bark looks so much different than mine.  I think we need to try them side by side!  Yours looked like it was busting from the seams with deliciousness and juices!

Congrats!
