use a cast iron pan to replace the chip box

I read in the Masterbuilt propane thread that some of them had replaced the chip holder with a cast iron pan so that when the door is opened the cast iron will help the heat to regenerate quicker.  Do you think this would work by setting the cast iron pan directly on the heating element or would there be a problem of some nature/

If you want to add something for use as a heat sink, I would just put either water or sand in the water pan instead of adding a skillet.

What holds heat better, cast iron or sand?
