I've been trying to smoke on my five burner gas grill for a couple years now with not much luck. I just can't seem to get the placement of the smoker box in the right place. I place it on top of the grates and it doesn't "smoke." So, I put it on the gas flames and it's burned up in just a few minutes. I usually get frustrated and end up cooking the meat in the oven. Any advice would certainly be appreciated. Thanks.

My Wife bought me a Weber Genesis a few years ago and I discovered that Weber made a smoking accessory for it...I bought it.
My BBQing was forever changed when I got "respectable" results on the very first try at smoking meat.
Ya might consider giving the chip drawer another shot...
On my old grill from Costco I tried using those cast iron chip boxes and is was nothing but big a PNA.
Here is what I have found that works for me on our Weber.
1. I don't soak the chips.
2. Load the chip cassette with whatever "flavor" of wood I choose for the meat.
3. Lite all 3 burners on high and wait for the temperature to rise to 450 indicated and hold it there a few minutes until I see some thin
4. Turn off the center and left burners but keep the right burner on at it's lowest setting.
5. Check and refill the chip cassette about every 50 minutes or so depending on the chips used.
I get a smoking temperature that settles in between 230-240 degrees on average.
Sometimes again depending on the chips and how close I am paying attention to the grill I might have to kick up the right burner after a chip reload to getum going again but usually less than 3 or 4 minutes on high then return the burner to low.
