Double Plating Top of Firebox - Page 4

I like blunt, straight to the point, but a little confused, you are saying my FB is to short, I thought I had a FB to CC opening problem ?,  If I have both of these problems, I may be better off just replacing my FB completely, that way I can raise it up making my opening larger, and raising my RF plate

When I posted my temps I failed to say how much fuel I burned,   I used about 15 to 16  lbs of charcoal and 7 or 8 splits of hickory for a 12 hour cook, It still was at temp when I pulled everything off and stayed that way for another hour or hour and a half.

It would be the best solution, ....going with one about 25% larger than recomended, double plating the top, and going taller to give the fire more room to breath and create a better draft would turn that into one really nice smoker.

Good thing is, you already have something to cook on, so you can take your time and really build a nice one, then just swap them out when its ready. The increased draft would probably compensate for the couple sq. inches your short on your opening, so you probably dont need to raise the reverse flow plate, just clean up the opening the best you can so you get every inch out of it.

Its a nice looking smoker!

Hey Gary, this has been an interesting read and experiment. Just curious if you had given any more thought as to what you plan to do.

Yeah, going to double plate top of fire box and drill the extra holes in the FB door, weather has been bad, and waiting on #2 son to slow down enough to get it done

R W and Dave, I am going to build another fire box, still kicking around ideas, may go with full insulated, but until I can get this done I thought I would just do the mods, I can also see how much effect and how it helps over what I have. Since I took the temps and fuel consumption, be a good baseline to compare. Probably be good information for the future
