Yeeeehaaaaa!!! - Page 2

I'm in the gathering stage as well. The kids need things to give me for Christmas.  I'm having issues with the pot, I don't want to spend $50 on it.  I haven't looked locally yet, mainly because I don't have the Smokey Joe until one of them gives it to me on Christmas.  It has to be 14.5", is that the right measurement?

Here's to your new forum indeed!

I am in this category, as far as apparatuses are concerned, and have smoked all my things - from lobster to frogs' legs to bison steaks and more - out on that thing!

Thanks for starting this place!!!!!!!!!!

Cheers! - Leah

I think so Fritz, but I'd have to measure again. I know that the Hoffritz 32 qt fits perfectly. Look at my other post in this forum. I have found it online at Sportsman's wholesale, Cabelas, and several other outlets. Here locally the pot is $29.00.

Plus this is just a bad time of year to buy a tamale pot since Tamales are a holiday must for Mexican families I should know,my family used to make about 20-30 dozen for x-mas every year.  You are usually cooking for two-three families not just your own.

Thanks BDS... I can get 2 on there... 4-5 lbs each... put them breast to breast... that way the back side is in the hottest part of the smoker.... I use a piece of 1/4" steel plate cut into a circle and leave about a 1" opening around the outside... and then a 12" cast iron skillet (minus the handle) sits on that.... cover it with foil for easy cleanup... when all this steel gets heated up it's a GREAT heat sync... ohhh.. I made a grate that goes down past the lip the steamer tray sits on... that way it sits in the bottom of the pot and then the steel plate and skillet sits on that...

Im going to try the cast iron skillet.  I "think" the terra cotta saucer is giving off fumes that I do not care for.

you can get them without the handle.. It was a bear to cut that handle off.... but I already had an old one that was never used.. so i cut the handle off it... did you cut the bottom of your pot out ? If so do you have a grate that fits down in it and sits in the bottom for the skillet to sit on ?

Yes.  I cut the bottom out of the pot out. I'm using a charcoal grate out of a Weber 18 inch for the defuser support. Works great and can support the cast iron pan with NO problem.

ok.. good deal.. your all set then .... I tried the terra cotta saucer at first a swell.. it split in half the first time i used it... that's why I went with the skillet... plus it holds more heat... just line it in double or triple foil for easy clean up....
