Big Green Egg - Chips vs Chunks

Thread Starter

I'm considering purchasing a BGE.  I've smoked for years using offset indirect smokers and have always used wood chunks.  I've noticed in most BGE user info, including Jeff's here, that chips are used with and without a firebox.  Do chips provide enough smoke for a good smoky flavored 8 pound butt or can I still use chunks and place them in with the lump charcoal?

Thanks!

For the most part, I have used chips. Even on a long 12-18 hr smoke, the meat takes in a good smoke flavor.  I've added chips in the middle of the smoke, but really find it to be unnecessary.  When I've used chunks, I can't tell that the smoke lasts any longer, to be quite honest.
