I'm just curious because I see a lot of people saying that they're a must have, especially with the MES.  I've got one in my shopping cart along with some applewood pellets and before I click 'buy' I had a quick question.... Why?

I mean, I see posts saying that smoke is only important for the first few hours of your smoke anyways so what's the point of having something that makes smoke 10-12hrs?  Isn't this overkill?  Also, it means I need to buy special pellets and that will likely mean ordering online.  I had the largest bag of pellets in my cart but I'm not really sure how long that will last so will I have to be ordering and paying shipping regularly?  I can get wood chips local cheap at places like Home depot & Lowe's and my first (and only) smoke worked great.

I guess I would just like to get some input before pulling the trigger on this to confirm that it's indeed the right move.  It seems what I have already will work alright (once I accounted for the MES being like 40deg off from the display... arg) and I'm hesitant to start ordering things that just don't seem to make sense compared to the other things I'm reading.  It seems adding a few tbsp of wood chips every 30min 6 times for the three hours of a smoke isn't the end of the world considering what most other types of smokers require in the form of baby sitting.

Thoughts?

The Amnps gives you lots of options such as true cold smoking. When using chips the can burn out really fast and if they turn to flames which can happen it can cause a bitter smoker flavor because the wood is burning and not smoking.

With the AMNPS you know you will get a consistent smoke to give you that great smoke flavor time after time. Also the availability of many flavors of pellets is a bonus. At you local home depot they prob have 3 flavors. With the pellet smoker you can get TONS.

Wise investment if you ask me. Good luck.

go ahead with your purchase, use the pellets in the amazin smoker from Todd. I rarely use the chips in either of my MES smokers bc the pellets do a better job. A big bag (20lbs) of pellets will last you quite a while 6- 8 months for the average  weekend warrior smoke person. They are a lot cheaper and produce a better product in the long run. thats my 2 cents worth.

I am curious as to where you put it in the MES.  Do you just put it on the bottom rack?  If so, does it not get affected by the juice dripping?  Can you just put in a partial load of pellets for say a couple hours of smoke?  Sorry for all the questions but never used one before.

From what I've seen people with the MES 30 just put it on the rack next to where the current wood tray goes.  If you use that pan that came with it you shouldn't have anything dripping into it.  Do a search for the mailbox mod because for not much money this seems like a really solid mod to make your life much easier for a number of reasons.  If/when I get an AMNPS I will likely do this mod before ever even using it.
