Just bought a tri tip today and paid close to six bucks a pound for it....but I suppose not many cows up here in AK! It was my first go at one and I think I may have found my new favorite cut!

I picked one of those up myself. I don't think I will do that again though. I got a 18.75lb pack of them. 5 tri tips total. 1 smallish, 3 regular and 1 giant one. Paid $2.77lb as well. I took off almost 7lbs of fat which took a bit of time/effort. I am not used to doing that much butchering on meat but I did a decent job I think. So that brought the cost to about $4.40lb. The meat is select grade which can be hit or miss. I cooked 3 of them up last weekend. They were good, but one of them had a nasty fat vein running right down the middle.

I think I will just pick up the choice grade tri tips pre-trimmed from the local grocery store for $4.99lb. Honestly though, the prime cut ones from Costco at $7.99 were really amazing. I don't mind paying the extra to avoid the fat trimming work and get a better cut of meat. Don't get me wrong, it's still a great deal from Cash N Carry, I am just too lazy. :)

Got the main fat cap off.

Did a SPOG seasoned one. My personal preference is to use a java rub on them. Still very tasty, easy/quick to smoke and great for leftovers.

Yep you do have to trim these. The other option is to get the Angus prime for $3.25. There are only 2-3 I'm those packs. Still have to trim and far better than Costcos. Our Costco sells the Tri for $8.99/lb and rarely has them in stock.

The Tris at our Costco are pretty pricey too.  BUT they taste sooooo good.  Next time I go...will check out the price here.  I gotta go and get my propane tanks refilled.  Don't have a full one outta the 4 tanks we use.  BUT at our local Costco....it's $9.49 per tank to re-fill.  Cheapest place to get propane around here.

Plus it's right next to HD! How convenient is that?!?!

I didn't see the angus choice grade. I checked their website and they say they have it in stock at $3.09lb which after trimming would be about 50% less than Costco's price. That could be worth it for sure.
