whole hog price opinion

Okay so I'm looking for your opinion on buying a pig already raised. The price is $250 for a 300-330 lb hog. Is this a good price versus buying all the meat in store?

Does this price include butchering or will you be doing that yourself?

I will be doing all the work with the pig. I am a butcher for a hunting outfitter.

I don't think that's an unreasonable price for a good privately sourced live-weight hog but be sure to get an accurate weight!!! Don't guess on the weight and never ever let the seller guess! icon_eek.gif

300 lb. hogs are currently 70-75 cents a pound live-weight around here.

id say that price is about right. i used to raise and sell hogs, never that big but id get $250 any day of the week for my porkys. and as stated before, make sure you get an exact weight, dont wanna pay the same price for a hog that weighs under, but then again thats when meat quality comes into play...

I bought one from the same farmer last year. he walks them onto the scale before putting them into the pen before slaughter. weight is accurate. Just thouggt id get some opinions if im paying too much or if its a good price.

Never heard of them being priced at pre-slaughter weight before. But then, I don't buy that many live hogs.

lol. if you ever get a chance id recommend going to one. theyre pretty cool if youre into that sorta thing. i love auctions.. grew up in FFA/4H community..everyone raises or raised livestock..from chickens to goats to full on steer. always fresh meat from house to house.

I just paid $1.30 per lb last week for my live pig. 120lbs live.. plus a slaughter fee and they butterflied it for me.. total cost $176. So $250 sounds reasonable for twice the wieght. I believe the farm I went to, for that big of pigs are even cheaper.. maybe a $1 per lb....

In my opinion once you break the 240-250lb range you have better ground to make deals. For my hogs (durocs) I would sell them at 240-250lb range and get easily $1.75-$2.00/lb for them. I'd stand to make at least $375 per hog.

Down here in miami they have a live pig farm and you buy them per pound pre-butchering as well, i believe the prices are .99-1.99/lb based on the time of the year. So i think you price is accurate, depends on location and availability. Out in the country i'm sure you would pay much less then a larger city.

 

My question is..how many people are you cooking for that you need a 300lb piggy? :) I did a 45lber on my Caja China and fed nearly 45 people with leftovers.

This pig is not for a whole hog cook. It will be hams, loin, sausage ,ribs and bacon for my freezer.

From live weight price u can double that price by the time its on the butcher block. I would say decent price. But i also agree once they hit over 250 they r no longer good for market as over weight. I usealy pay $200 for a 300+ live hog and total process myself. Just like anything else buying in bulk saves money and ur cutn out the cost of someone else labour and profits. Happy eats !
