My Name is Jay Spence, I'm in Eastern TN...I've got a couple of friends who are great smokers and it is a skill I want to start to learn... I'm in the process of buying my first smoker and have narrowed it down to two different smokers the Char-Griller 6719 Series Kamado Charcoal Grill OR Brinkmann Trailmaster Limited Charcoal Smoker and Grill any advice one what I should get???  some people say the Brinkmann is more traditional with the sidebox where the Kamado is more versatile... I'm a beginner so I don't know what way to go...PLEASE HELP!!! I have about a $300 budget so both these are pushing my budget, I do plan to by extra things for these smokers as reviews for both of them seem to say needed some minor adjustments...

You might want to check out ”Jeff's Free 5 day E-Course”, it will teach you all the basics plus a whole lot more!

I have never used either of those smokers but I know a lot of members here have, try posting your questions over in our "Charcoal Smokers" forum, I think you will get a lot more responses over there.

welcome1.gifto SMF!  We are so glad you joined us! Haven't used those smokers.  BUT...this is the best place to do ore research.  Stop by the Charcoal Smoker area and ask those questions.  The folks that have used/own them will be happy to give their 2 cents.


We love to see pictures of what you are cooking (or what we call q-views here at SMF).  To "upload the q-views" just follow the directions here and it will be easier. If you are using a cell phone, an IPad or a kindle, go to the main SMF page and click the Mobile button. Will make the uploads a bit faster too.


If you didn't read the "Terms of Service" notes.....please do.  There are a few things that everyone should know about those pesky little rules before plunging into the forums and some guidelines of how to interact within the forums. Off site links are not allowed here at SMF per Jeff. Not that you have done anything wrong....just a little bit of FYI for new members!

Hi Jay, and welcome to the forums!  This is the best place I know for sharing ideas on smoking, grilling, curing, etc.  There are plenty of friendly, knowledgeable folks who really enjoy helping one another.  Looking forward to your input here, and just ask when you need anything...someone here will surely have the answer.  I'm not directly familiar with either of the smokers you asked about...try asking the guys in the smokers forums for some advice from those who have used these rigs.

Glad you joined the group. The search bar at the top of any page is your best friend.
About anything you wanna know about smoking/grilling/curing/brining/cutting or slicing
and the list goes on has probably been posted. Remember to post a QVIEW of your smokes.
We are all smoke junkies here and we have to get our fix. If you have questions Post it
and you will probably get 10 replies with 11 different answers. That is because their
are so many different ways to make great Q We all have our own taste.

I have not used ether of those smokers. Check out the reviews in the smoker section.

Thanks for the reply...I read so many reviews last night again that I found on here..This is an amazing page without questions..I've read so many pros and cons from each I feel like I'm back at square one...I just want a smoker/grill that I can have amazingly great food on, I love the smoke flavoring...I narrowed it down to these two just because of friends who use them... I'm open to just about anything All I know after reading the reviews is I still have a budget of $300 and don't know what  type of smoker to get...

Hey, Welcome to the forums! Here is my two cents. The Brinkmann offset you are looking at is really not the greatest, it is very hard to control temps and the metal is very thin. With an offset you really need quality metal to be able to maintain and distribute heat. With that being said, it would be hard to find something like that in your budget, so I would go with the Brinkmann trailmaster VERTICAL smoker. A few mods will make this smoker perform very well while still giving you the "stick burner" feel. Not to mention the loads of room you have to smoke meat and the fact that you can hang sausage and ribs inside the chamber.


I love the Kamado style grills but, the trade off their is space, you really won't be able to smoke as much in that kamado. Great performing grills though, and very versatile.


My last suggestion would be to build a UDS. I love mine and find myself lighting up the UDS more often than any other smoker I have. For $300 you could build 2 or possible 3 if your frugal. Anyway, keep us posted on what you decide to do! Good Luck!
