WSM Mods.

Hello all!

I had a question for those of you who did the 3/8 grommet mod on the WSM. Has anyone noticed any temperature issues with these new holes, maybe some extra air running out?

It looks small enough that it shouldn't let much air out, but I wanted to check.

thanks

I did a similar version of that mod that was posted on this web site using some brass lamp fittings. I have a small amount of smoke ocassionally but runs like a champ. Another bonus to using those lamp parts is the rod is threaded so u can cap whats not in use and is extremely cheap. Works for the bigger maverick high temp probes.

Thanks for the response! I actually might have found something.

I'm not sure. Mine doesn't. Cajun Bandit sells a kit that is a grommet set up.

I can't use the Cajun Bandit ones because I have a Maverick. I did see that the new WSM's have a rubber grommet for probes, and handles built in, so I'm hoping mine comes with that.

You might also want to consider cutting a slot in the rim for the probe wires as opposed to going with the grommet....it's another way to go , and lots of WSM owners have liked it.
I made my own grommet from lamp parts....pretty easy and cheap too. And I'm pretty sure the heat loss is negligible .

Thanks for the input! I've seen that mod too, and I think I could do that easier. I'm hoping mine is just the new model, and I don't have to do any mods!

I came up with the lamp rod eyelet mod back when I got my 22.5" WSM years ago - I was to cheap to buy the Cajun Bandit ones... lol. They have never made any impact (that I can tell) on my temps, and they have never caused any rust from drilling the holes.

I did see one thread where somebody also purchased the lamp rod caps and used them to cover the hole when no probe was being used. Or as Hambone pointed out a lot of folks also like the "slot" method as well.

Glad to hear Weber is making them a standar offering now on the new WSM's.

Thanks for the input! Your post actually was what sparked my interest. It looks like on the new ones, that they decided to make the bottom grommet big enough for any probe.

Nice to know Weber is paying atention to what people are doing with the WSM's. It amazed me how fast my mod caught on... lol - I was just trying to figure out a way to be cheap and save a few bucks. biggrin.gif

Yea jrod, what seperates ur mod from all of these gromets web sites are selling, is using the lamp fittings u can cap ur probe holes. It was a great idea that is cash efficient.

This has worked out great for me..it's sealed all the time and easy access for all the probes

Nice!

I looked at conduit, but didn't want to drill that large of a hole through the enameled sides of the WSM - I was really nervous when I did the 3/8 drill for the lamp rod... lol. It's always nice to see other cost saving mods... more ways to save $$ for meat! sausage.gif

Yeah, it was hard for me to drill that hole through the beautiful finish but it's gotta be done. I used the lamp nipple as well and I have to say it is almost too small when I am using both my Digi-Q and Maverick.

I also replaced my door because I just hated the cheap look of the stock door. Yeah, I'm vain but damn it if smoking isn't my biggest hobby nowadays. I also used some fireproof gasket material (the thinnest I could find) to seal the door to the grill better. What I really would like to do is mount the door on a hinge someday.

I did the slot. I really like the convenience.
