Hi Dave, Sorry to the late reply but the “Boss” was home for few days and if she sees me on this forum she starts to give me “That Look -  Like there goes the Kitchen..”

Thanks for posting the information about your garlic.   This planting of Garlic was more of less a learning experience for me.   When I first saw your pictures in your profile, I thought Wow!!  and had to give it a try.  The truth is, between you, Pops6927 and Chief Jimmy, I get myself in to a lot of trouble in my old age..    I sometimes think the wife has a security cam mounted in the kitchen so she can keep en eye on the place while she is at work.

Minnesota has a crazy growing season this year.  We started out cold and wet. The ground didn’t warm up until late June.     For many years I had to buy our Dill when making pickles because the cucumbers were always coming before the Dill.  This year I have Dill and no Cucumbers yet.    I’ve been cutting the dill and haanging it to dry just so it keeps growing.

Thanks again for the info on the Garlic and all great tips in the past..

John

John, You are welcome......   sounds like your climate is perfect for hardneck garlic..... Our ground warms around the 5-10th June.....

I recently just planted a few poinds of garlic. Not sure what kind, just got it at our local seed store. Hope it turns out as well as yours. Congrats

Cool....    It should grow just fine....  It usually takes 3 years or so to get fully acclimated to weather and soil conditions....  so you will get really large bulbs in the future....    Mine is going on 7 or 8 years now.... looking pretty darn good....

Dave for weed control I put on a 6" layer of leaves in the fall, it does double duty it insulates the bulbs in the winter from the several freeze thaw cycles we get which can kill the bulbs, then in the spring and growing season it keeps the soil moist and smothers out the weeds. Once harvested I just till the leaves in and add some manure till that in and I'm ready to plant again.

Big Guy, morning.....  This is my garlic on June 7 '13...  The mulch you see is what's left from the Oct '12 planting....  The mulch was under snow for 4 months...  I use chopped alfalfa for mulch......

I was going to post a picture of my garlic beds , but I get a weird error message ( AJAX response unable to be parsed as a valid JSON object )?  I like leaves because they are plentiful and free, they mat down nicely and don't break down too quick.

I finally got all the bulbs planted.... Elephant, Zemo, Montana Zemo, Siberian, Lithuanian Purple and Metechi for the garlic... Shallots, multiplier onions and roots from the Walla Walla sweets Bride is sauteeing to freeze.... we will see if the roots send up green onions in the spring....  they should.... seen 'em growing in the compost pile..... Will let you know in about 6 months.......

Finally had to turn on the water.....   It was supposed to rain for the last 4 weeks, but not a drop....

I think that means we will have about 2' of snow this winter when about 6-8" is normal......

...chopped alfalfa is finally on the beds for a nice layer of mulch...
