I found that very little info on the actual cooking.  Do I need to make the opening from the fire box to the cooking chamber smaller help keep meat from burning that is close to the fire?

Hello and welcome.  You are going to have to provide WAY more information if you want answers.  Just reading between the lines I assume you are cooking on and offset smoker?
