I prefer an over sized firebox, usually go 25% larger than what pit recommends, and go tall to allow plenty of air space above the flames, so as to allow complete combustion.  This will also give you plenty of room to adjust fire placement and help fine tune the air movement.

Hi! It's been  a while I had to put my build on hold for a bit. But now I am back to finish it and start cooking!!!! I have a question for you folks. After all the math has been done and I am to a point of installing the chimney the length is 44" tall. I have been looking at some of the builds online and have noticed that some of the chimneys drop below the tank and into the cooking chamber. Is this a good thing to do? Is that part of the height of the chimney?  what is the advantage or disadvantage to this? Thanks!!!

It's good to be back!!!

Tim

Dropping the chimney into the CC, pulls heat across the cooking grate... about mid way between the grate and top of the CC seems to work.... The calculated chimney height is the height above the CC.....
