I can tell you a true snipe story.
Back in the day's when dinosaurs roamed the earth and I was a teenager, my cousin and I were quail hunting on our grandfathers farm. We had jumped a small covey and they flew into the swampy area near the lake. As we walked up on them again (this time ready to harvest a few for dinner), when they came up, I shot one. At least I thought it was one. Turned out to be a snipe (yes the real one like Bearcarver posted a photo of). That is the only time I have ever seen a snipe around here. Guess he was minding his own business when the quail flew in and he joined the covey in panic when they broke cover (bad timing on his part). Tasted like quail though. So not only have I caught a snipe, we ate it with the rest of the quail from that day as well.
Sad thing is I still live in the same area all these eons later and have not even heard a single Bob White quail in probably 20 years. Plenty of farms and woodland still here, just no quail. No Whipporwill's either. Instead we now have coyotes who decimate ground the nest of ground nesting birds and eat the eggs. And no, coyotes are not native to Georgia.
