So after my first smoke and reviewing alot of threads, I still have a couple of questions/clarifications which I am sure someone can help me out with.

I intend to use this unit as a wood burner.  I have read the thread on fire control, however since I am sure the wheel has been invented already, what size of splits do people use?  I have access to pecan log trimings and alot of oak.  I am thinking about 2x2x8?

Need to order a thermometers.  Looking at the Mav 732 and the Thermoworks RT301WA.  Knowing me, just putting them thru the door will end up getting the cables smashed/kinked.  So the question really is, how are folks routing the probes?

If you really wanted to dress it up you could drill holes below cooking grate level put in a high heat grommet and run your wires through it.You can get these at any home depot or lowes.

Hello , Joe ss . Your Pecan wood is sooo perfect for Smoking, I'm jealous

.  The size you are thinking of is right for the Pit you have and with a little practise you can control the heat .

I am a dedicated wood burner (pics in my profile) and suggest using a small-hot-fire :

of mostly 'Embers' . This produces a nice thin 'Blue' smoke aka- TBS . Controling is , as with all other wood burners , an ongoing job. That fact -to me - is the fun of Smoking on a unit like this ; slow and demanding , but the results are worth the trouble. See my Profile Q-view , there are albums at the very bottom of the page.

The therms. of mine are introduced through little holes just aboue the grill level for my wires ( grommets) . One at each end. Your cables to the therm. is probably too short for the Exhaust thing...

Enter Stickburning 101 in the search box at the top of this page . I explain controlling and sizing your fire there and the size of your fuel .

Asl ways,have fun and...

Thanks Oldschool.  I have read your post at least 6 times and I think I hit on something new everytime I read it.  The reason I got the smoker is I wanted to have a bit more space (vs. 22.5 kettle) and be able to cook over wood. Can't wait to claim the title of a dedicated wood burner!
