my main reason for the separate box was so i could use it when hot smoking. otherwise the fat would drip on it and put it out, or flare up. i also will be using it for cold smokeing. it would work fine for that without the box. other than if you are doing a long cold smoke. you would have to remove the food, to refill tha AMNPS.
i sprayed it with oil. did a burn and it is good to go!Hey David. Nice build! Love the use of the ammo can! i think I'm gonna go with that too. Since you sand blasted the interior of the box, are you having any issues with rust yet? Also are you planning on coating it with anything? seasoning it maybe?
AMNPS won't stay lit in the UDS. (Well at least not in mine it won't) also can reload the AMNPS if needed.
thank you jrodlove the ammo box mod for the AMNPS.
On my mailbox mod all I do is slip it on then when i'm done take it off and put the cap back on to shut the UDS down. Can you take the ammo box off ? If not can you cut the air flow off so you can
kill the fire in the drum? Next question is do you have holes in the ammo box for air flow or do you leave the lid open some. I have a few ammo boxes sitting around and a stack UDS to finish.

hello WadeDavid that build looks great. I love the attention to detail and the step-by-step construction guide.
Have you considered adding in a smoke baffle at the point where the smoke enters the chamber to help more evenly distribute the smoke and help prevent uneven smoking? With the single point of entry into the chamber, once you load the chamber with meat and get the air draw from the top you may find that the meat on the side of the AMNPS will get a heavier smoke than the meat on the opposite side.
