I got a new smoker for xmas and I'm starting to get everything ready. I've read that the built in thermometers are crap and that I should get my own. I was thinking I'd like to just drill a hole in my smoker and put the thermometer in that. Can you guys recommend a good one? Is there one with possibly a nut on the back or something so I could tighten it to hold it in place? Also, where would be the best place to put the thermometer? I have a brinkman charcoal stand up smoker like this http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/pr...301-c-smoke-n-grill-charcoal-smoker-and-grill

Not many of the dial type thermometers stand up for long. You have to constantly calibrate them.

I would look into a Maverick style digital remote thermometer. It needs to be programmable, not preprogrammed. I bought a couple preprogrammed ones and their temp ranges are not good for smoking.....

You can get a commercial quality Tel-Tru thermometer for a decent price on E-Bay.  That's where I got the one I use in my WSM in 2005. I think I paid around $25 for this one.  They come in different face sizes and with different stem lengths.  I used a step drill to make a hole in the dome of my WSM and permanently mounted mine.   I also have a Maverick and other remote read probe type thermometers.  Each has it's use and I like being able to cross check them against each other.  The Maverick will also tell you the meat temperature as well.

So maybe I should get both, a probe and the dial, to make sure they are both in calibration?

Ok, I'm thinking of this one for my smoker temp
and this for a meat probe, anyone have any additional input?
