So I am having a strange issue with my Maverick today.  I started up my smoker pretty early this morning, so wasn't really paying attention to which probe I plugged into which side of the transmitter. After I put the meat on (and woke up a little bit) I realized I had them backwards, the meat probe was plugged into the barbecue side and the barbecue probe was plugged into the food side.  All temperature readings were working fine, and its not hard to tell just by looking at numbers which is which. But for whatever reason I decided to swap the probes so they were in the proper plugs. When I did this the Barbecue thermometer worked just fine and showed its temp, but the meat thermometer just showed "LLL." Tried cycling the power on the units, unplugging and replugging the probe and all sorts of things, no luck still just "LLL" on the meat.  So I swapped them back, and everything once again appears to be working as intended, with the exception that the meat thermometer is plugged into the barbecue side, and the barbecue thermometer is plugged into the food side.

Not a huge problem since I can still get my temp readings, just found it interesting that the probe seems to work if plugged into one side, but not the other. Anyone know if there are differences between the two sides that could be causing this, or any other suggestions of what the issue might be?

Thanks,

Barret

Barret,

The Maverick will do that at low temps and if you interrupt the signal.  Swapping the probes with the unit still on confused it.

Just turn everything off, swap the probes, turn on the receiver unit first then turn on the transmitter and everything should be fine,

Good luck,

Bill

I would suggest that you did not have the probe inserted all the way in to the meat side to get the LLL most of the time that's it.  some times my 732 takes 1/2 min or so then it shows temp.  I would try switching again and make sure both probes are pushed in tight and wait a min to see. It makes no difference except for the display what probe you have plugged into what jack.

I've done a little further testing, including doing what you recommended Bill.  What I have discovered is that the range at which the "Food" plug displays temperatures is not the same as the "Barbecue" side. Here is what I did.

1. "Meat" probe plugged into "Barbecue" side "Barbecue" Probe into "Meat" side.  Both probes read and report temps fine, although meat is very cold (I don't think it thawed all the way through).

2. Turn of unit, swap probes (Meat into Meat, Barbecue into Barbecue), Turn On unit. Barbecue probe reads find, Meat displays LLL

3. Remove Meat Probe from meat, but leave plugged in. Meat probe starts reading temps consistent with what the barbecue probe shows because they are both just sitting in the smoker.

4. Re-insert meat probe into meat. Displays temps as the probe cools back off to the temp of the meat for a few seconds, then goes back to showing LLL.

Thus my conclusion that, the "Barbecue" side of the transmitter will displays temps down around 35 degrees but the meat side won't display temps that low and instead shows the LLL.  So if you have really cold meat, and you thermometer seems to be acting strange, just give it some time.
