From the advice of many on here, I bought some mesquite and oak chunks for my Smokin It #1 smoker instead of the chips I planned on using.  I bought the chunks from Lowes ($8 for 700 cu. in.).    But, quite a few pieces have bark on them.   Is it absolutely necessary to remove the bark?  I don't have any saws or axes so I have no way of removing the bark and don't want to spend any more money on this new hobby than I have to.  So what should I do?   Use the pieces with bark on it and don't worry about it, or should I stick to using chips?

I cook with wood splits in my Lang and if the splits have bark on 'em, in they go.  I use wood chunks in the GOSM and and if the piece has bark no big deal.  Now if you have mold or some gross stuff growing on the bark, then pull the bark off.

YMMV (your milage may vary)
