Here's my needs:

I won't be smoking a lot at one time.  In the past, I've used my old gas grill to cook low & slow and tried using wood chips (got pitiful results).  Now grill's on its last leg so time to invest in the real thing.

I'm on a budget so hope to find something under $150, if that's even possible with electric.  I HAVE done lots research.  In fact, was doing just that when I stumbled across this forum so thought, "who better to ask then the ones who know?"

I would like to have a separate access to the smoker box (isn't that a good thing?) and preferably one with a front access door, since I'll be in the learning stage and will be checking on my meat more than a pro would so it's easier to access that way (right?).

Or - maybe someone can suggest something I can rig up myself.  I'm pretty handy when it comes to that, even if I am a girl....lol.

I will mainly just be doing stuff for myself (or maybe a friend or two) that I can eat off of for a few days....like whole chickens, ribs, a cheap (marbled...I know...lol) cut of pork or beef.  Being single and on a budget means I pretty much buy what I call "scratch & dent" meat (anything reduced for quick sale) and then go home and cook it that night, so I'm not in the same league as you guys, doing five things at once!!  LOL  Altho it would be great to smoke a turkey for the holidays, now that I think of it.

I DID see Kat's pics of sausage, tho, and will definitely be having to try that out, since I make my own 'healthy' sausage from ground turkey (trying to lose a few lbs :).

I'm sure someone will say...better to invest in something that will last than waste my money on something cheap, but I just don't have the funds.  I'd rather get the cheapy one for now and get good at smokin, THEN...feed my uncle, who may...after eating my delicious smoked fair...offer to buy me a nicer one for my birthday in April.  Ha ha ha....you see how my evil minds works?

PS - realized this is important.  I live on coast of VA, so cold weather is not really an issue.  Heck, we think it's cold when it gets below 40...lol.

Thanks to all !!

Here are a couple of links you can search if you have not already done so:

Old Smokey has a lot of user reviews and there should be some youtube videos available. I remember a couple of posts here regarding this smoker.

Another electric can be found here as well as wood supplies:

These are, to my knowledge, the least expensive of the electrics and are no frills. There may be post/threads on this one as well.

Smokin-It and SmokinTex have some small smokers, not really in the $150 range you might want to consider. There may be some old style Masterbuilts still available without the new model problems many write about..  The MES threads should be really helpful in this area.

Good luck with your search.

Low's on line have some in your price range. One on sake 149.00.

Master Forge 32.5-in 800-Watt Electric Vertical Smoker
  • The two-drawer system allows you easy access to the wood chip box and water pan without opening main chamber door and releasing heat
  • Includes built-in LCD display control panel with push-button control
  • Large 768 sq. in. of smoking area with insulated cooking chamber and doors
But reviews are not good. They have many more in your price range with out two doors.

I bought a Masterbuilt electric model 20070910 through Walmart and shipped to store. So far very happy with unit. You can get three year warranty on it for $12.00. Witch is probably good to have, just in case. Insulated walls make it nice for winter use. Just my two cents.

Good luck

The  Old Smokey is a very nice entry level smoker with good reviews.

Hey Bonnie . Welcome to the forum. I will throw this out there because in your price range , I don't think you have a ton of options.

This price looks high , also . I would bet you could go to lowes or HD and get one for less money.
I used to have a brinkmann charcoal smoker like this and it was an ok entry level smoker. Now , I have not cooked on an electric smoker myself , but if you are set on an electric and you want to do the kind of cooking you describe (although , I am not sure how well an electric can function as a grill )
This seems like it might be a viable choice for you.

However you go , I wish you luck.:grilling_smilie:

Sarge...I'm a bit confused about the Big Chief. It's described as "vented for proper dehydration"...which I'm guessing means it can be used for stuff like jerky. But can it also be used for whole meats & ribs and if so, doesn't smoke leak out the square hole in front (where im guessing wood tray handle sticks out)?

Love the OS and their website!! Very user friendly with one stop shopping to boot!  And now that I see how it is put together, looks like it would be pretty easy to make one with a hotplate element and big steel lobster pot. Am i gonna???....probably not...lol.

Bonnie!  What I started with was a bright red electric Brinkman.  Was $69.95 last year at Home Depot.  I have had some amazing food come out of her....named her Elvira.  Porbably going to use her today to smoke a pork loin.

It could be a great way to start out and its simple to put together.  I did it!  Then you will have more time to perfect your "smokes" and research what other smoker you want to move up to.

My humble 2 cents!

Ha ha ha Kat! Great minds think alike. Been eyeing exact same one at Ace (same price as HD). It's gone up 10 bucks but still a great deal, I think.  Thanks for the 2 cents !!

Just buy a Bradley BS611 then you wont have to scour around for a good electric cuz you will already have one.

Nepas - I hear ya.....shes a beauty! so what ur sayin is...ur gonna cough up the rest of the dough so i can afford it??

I looked at some youtube videos on the big and little chief smokers.  They are vented.

Yep...I know. I was askin... didnt the vent (which I think I am mistaking for the hole in front) let smoke escape when doing butts, whole chix, etc??? I didnt think that was a good thing. ???Remember....I'm still learning...lol.

Thanks for the thread. I hope others will post, as I too would like to know which smokers folks use. How long they have used it, and been happy with it.

I/we are those kinds of folk that at times get a wild hair, and when we do something it is "a bunch of it" so I need a decent size. We wouldn't pay a thousand, but would pay a few hundred for a really good smoker.  I had a couple recommendations for the Bradly (analog, not digital) "if" I were going to go with an electric.  I have researched for several weeks, and seems like many ppl (real smokers I guess, I dunno) do no like to use "electric" as they are generally a tight seal, and hold in too much moisture for "meats". More importantly, on the Bradley it would seem that the new ones, since 2011 (still analog) have had real fire issues. I tried to call Bradly the other day, to discuss this with them, but never got through.   I really liked the looks of the Masterbuilt or maybe it is MasterForge (can't remember right this sec.) but it has a glass door to see inside. Then I read that with that one, after a few uses many ppl started tasting and smelling a metallic taste.  Grr... What to do??

So.....For the moment, we put it all on hold, and are making a makeshift smoker for the 40lbs. of bacon we are working on, as we are Newbies to "smoking stuff"... It will not be perfect, I am sure. We probably will not post pix (I am a newbie here anyways). I know that our first batch of 1 belly/bacon, which we smoked on the grill, turned out better than anything I have EVER bought. Plus, I got the satisfaction of knowing "I did it".  :-)

Look forward to reading post here from the pro's. Hopefully, I will also find other post about smokers.  Still, all in all thinking something of a DIY for us, but it would be nice to have another option for smaller amounts etc.

I did see that, thax.  He might have one like the others who referred me to it that was built before 2011.  I have several ppl who told me they have had and heavily used their for like 6 yrs. That was pre-2011.. I wonder if they changed manufactures or something?
