So I've been using a Traeger and I love, love it, but it just doesn't give the smokey flavor I crave. So I went ahead and made a pouch of chips to add smoke flavor and that worked, sort of. Anyways, I'll keep my Traeger forever because it's just so darn easy and the meat is always very good off of it. However, I wanted to start dabbling in charcoal/wood smoking and learn the art.....I've been looking online for used smokers, but haven't come across anything real interesting yet, so I'll continue to shop.

The other night, as I was leaving the neighborhood I saw a buddy of mine had put an old electric Brinkmann Gourmet out on the curb. So I grabbed it and called him to ask what was wrong with it and he said the heating element went out. I thought perfect...I'll just convert it to charcoal- surely someone's done this before. I googled how to do it and found a couple of ideas, but I wanted to ask the real experts. Surely someone here has done it, but even if not, I know someone's got some ideas. I look forward hearing what ya'll think.

I have one of those....don't see why you can't just take the element that has gone kaput out...and just use the bottom part as a firebox for the charcoal.  I used a charcoal one before I got the electric.  Same design...just with a hole at the bottom for the element.
