I'm new to the world of smoking meats.  Just got my first smoker this past Christmas; a Cajun Injector electric smoker (model #1939).   Tried it out for the first time on New Years Day.......I decided to try smoking a 7lb pork shoulder, maybe a bit much for the first time out.  The smoker manual said to smoke it for 4-5 hrs @ 225 degrees, which sounded great......but it probably should have been for 8-10 hrs....oh well turned out ok.....not quite how I had planned, but a good lesson anyways.

I think for the next smoke I will try something a bit smaller, like a pork tenderloin or ribs.

I live in southern Michigan in the USA.

As far as your smokers manual  instructing you to cook by time and not temperature will usually never work out except for ribs. I would recommend a quality dual probe thermometer so you can keep track of you pit temps and meat temps at the same time. Smoking is done by temperatures not time and a quality thermometer with get you turning out quality BBQ in a hurry.
