I finally received my replacement MES 40 controller today. It's been on order for a month but the order ended up in purgatory and didn't ship until Monday. Anyway, I installed it and ran a test using my Maverick ET-732 to compare the smoker temp to the thermometer. The probe was set in the center of the second shelf from the top. The MES was set for 275 and given an hour to heat up. The outside temp was 18 degrees. With the new controller the internal temp registered 277. The 732 was showing a temp of 295. During heating the difference between the smoker and 732 at 260 degrees was +-2 degrees. I'll test it with food next weekend.

One problem that did crop up was that the remote no longer worker with the controller. I followed all of the manual instructions regarding relinking the two devices but no luck. I tried new batteries, resetting the smoker, and even followed the instructions. Nothing is working. Anyone else have this problem?

I was sent a replacement remote, because the original seemed to have poor range (~10'). The new remote won't talk to the controller at all. The instructions for doing a relink in the manual are pretty confusing, so they sent me a video of an engineer going thru the procedure. From memory, it's something like:

a) Turn on the remote and turn on the controller

b) Press and hold down "Set Temp" on the controller. You should hear a beep

c) After 3 seconds the controller beeps again for a 2nd time. You can release "Set Temp" on the controller.

d) On the remote, press "Meat Temp", "Light", "Meat Temp", "Light". There should be a beep from the controller after each press.

In my last email back to MB I told them that I was thinking the problem is with the controller.

I spoke with Masterbuilt this morning. I explained the situation and the solution offered was to replace the remote and controller. They require a number off the back of the MES that I didn't have on me. Apparently there is a number that designates the factory code. The factory code is used to determine what the proper replacement parts are for your specific grill. It must tell MB which factory made the smoker or what production run is involved. Either way some controllers and remotes are not compatible so the necessary request for more information.

With the new controller the internal temp registered 277. The 732 was showing a temp of 295. During heating the difference between the smoker and 732 at 260 degrees was +-2 degrees.
It seems like one of the two is off on the temp readings. What I've found with mine is that the MES readings seem to be slow to pick up change. My 732 shows the temp change a lot sooner (minutes) before the MES shows the temp change.
