Hi,

I was wondering what opinions anybody had on the placement of the vent on the newer models of the Masterbuilt propane verticle smokers. I am used to using the one with the smoke chimney on the top of the unit . I noticed on the new models there are adjustable vents on the back wall near the top. This worries me if it would happen to be a windy day if the cool air blowing into those vents could make it hard to keep temperature.  Anybody have experience with these new models and is this an issue i should be worrying about? thanks!

Welcome to the SMF Family SirSmokey, Apparently they did the same to the Gasser as the Electric. The Vent is undersized and definitely an issue when the wind blows. The boys are looking into an effective mod...JJ

I figured this and sadly almost all of them have the back ventilation now. Keep me posted! I have been looking at the Masterbuilt model 20050412. It claims to have a top vent but none of the pictures show it. It is a dual fuel model.  Also i have been looking at the 20051311 . Both have dual doors which i like. Any suggestion on which of the two may be better??

Here is some reading for you...

I think something like this will get you started. Cut the corners of the Rectangular area and bent them to make a flange to mount the duct, then add the desired length of straight pipe...JJ

I googled the Masterbuilt model 20050412 and found some pics of it. Here's a side view of it - and you can see the adjustable vent there at the bottom. There are also 4 open vertical slots on the top back of the unit. I also found a pic of the model 20051311 and it has the same vent set up.

Thanks so much for the pics. I have been looking around for days and couldn't find any. I see this is just something I'm gonna have to deal with. Thanks again

I don't remember where I got that exact image but yes they are available at home centers or HVAC supply stores. It is called a 90 degree Stack Boot and comes in various sizes...JJ

well i opted for the 20050611 model smoker by Masterbuilt. This was kinda last minute and i came across it on accident. I couldn't pass it by (on clearance) for 139 bucks!! . Its only a single door but after comparing it to the double door models, it seemed to have more space and the racks can be arranged to fit many different sizes of meats whereas the double door model was limited. Im getting it ready right now and plan to do my first smoke in it in a few hours. The rear venting doesn't seem to be an issue with the temp and i hope that holds so. Thanks again for everyones info you really helped me out!

... newbie here ... great reading ... thanks!

JJ - howdy! Do you have any pix of the HVAC piece flanged to the smoker? I have a mental visual, but pix help.

Living in Falcon, Colorado (east of Colorado Springs), we get some vicious winds. I've been battling with a Brinkmann these last few years, fabricating wooden boxes and old comforters to shield from the cold and wind - I'm trashing it!! Not even worth selling. I'm going for a MBPro like mentioned in this thread. I love the addition of the vent to help shield from the winds.

Thanks for all the help and reading ... off to go spend some money.
