The kids were just coming up to their first anniversary right after Christmas. SIL knows that I like to grill and smoke and had seen the mini-WSM I made last Spring. Sooooooo . . . for Christmas I put together a package of the Smokey Joe Silver and the 32 Qt. tamale steamer from Wallyworld. I also bought extra grills and a smaller one to sit just above the fire box to hold the terra cotta flower pot saucer. Even got him 2 different sizes of stainless steel screws to use for grill positioning. I left it up to him to build it because I think he will enjoy it more than if I had just done it for him. The only part I forgot was the can for blocking the charcoal ash to prevent it choking the air flow.

Can't wait to see what he comes up with and how he likes it.

That was a great gesture and gift...JJ

Wow - SIL is lucky to have someone like you to help him get started. That's a really cool gift!

Very nice gesture, rabbithutch. 2 of my SIL are wrench turners by trade or by hobby and would appreciate the "build it yourself" aspect of your gift. My other SIL wouldn't even understand the concept.

That's funny!...I am one one of the in between guys...I get the Concept but the only Tools I have or can use well are Knives, Whisks and Pans!...JJ

Thanks for the kind words, my friends!

I looked upon it as a gentle nudge down the slippery slope

He's a great young man and I'm certain he will like both the DIY aspect and the smoking aspect.

Unfortunately mine is the same way. But he's perfectly happy with what 'Que I send his way.

Well at least you didn't give him everything he needs. This way is more fun, he gets to suffer a little and marvel at the fact that your invention works so well for you but not for him.

Then when he doesn't figure it out on his own, you get to come to the rescue and "show him the light".

"Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Give him a defective fishing rod, and he depends on you for help for a lifetime".

Well played, sir, well played.

My question is for rabbithutch.

I seen the mini's and all the sports emblems painted on them online. I think they used some sort of automotive high heat paint. Did you paint the tarheel emblem on your smoker? that would be sooo cool!

my husband is a huge UNC Tarheel fan!

Howdy, All!

My SIL is very busy working and going to school. He has a degree in business management but the job market was so bad when he graduated that he decided to become an RN. DD (darling daughter) has joined him in studying nursing. They have a very full schedule and work very hard, but I'm sure when they get the schooling behind them that he will pursue the arts and sciences of smoking meat. He works sometimes as the cook and sometimes as the the line chef at a major restaurant chain, but mostly he works as a waiter because he makes more money waiting table.

He will probably join us here when he has more leisure time.

And, alas, no - I have not painted Ramesis on my smoker . . . at least not yet. :bluesbros:
