Hello,

I was wondering if anyone here owns a Traeger smoker/grill and what you think of it.  Even if you don't own one

perhaps you know someone who does and whether or not they are happy with it.

I like the idea behind the grill ... i.e. it has a pellet chamber that it slow-trickles into the fire to automagically

control the temperature. to keep the user's work to a minimum.  I also like the idea of mix/match on the pellets

in any ratio I want.

My concerns are

1.  Long-term costs of the pellets (it seems they run about $0.95 per pound but then if that pound gives you efficient burning, it easily pays for itself)

2.  Whether or not I can mulch my own wood and substitute that for the pellets

3.  Flavor quality being limited by quality of the pellets

4.  2nd or 3rd source for the pellets (which is related to item 2)

All feedback is welcome and appreciated.

Thanks!

I cannot address your questions but I can tell you I have two buddys who have them and both love them. I don't think either of them are BBQ aficionados, and I've never eaten their BBQ, but they both say they produce good BBQ.

My cousin has one and he really enjoys it, but he is more of a griller than a smoker.

The one thing I don't like about them is the fact that the pellets are your heat source. He does go through lots of bags of pellets. He was paying the premium price for the traeger pellets and that was starting to limit his usage with the down economy. In our area we have a restaurant wholesaler that sells to the public and they now carry pellets $8.99/ 20# bag. So he has switched to them. and can use it more.

I don't think you can use anything except pellets do to how the system feeds them.
