I'll most probably get a Maverick meat thermometer, but I'd like an accurate door thermometer as well. I was informed the one on my Masterbuilt 2 door propane smoker would probably be off. Any suggestions? In advance thanks for your knowledge

I just picked up a digital prob type from Sears for $14.95.  My first of this type.  I don't remember the name brand at the moment.  Having it mounted at grate level reads at least 50 degrees different from the thermometer mounted 6 inches above grate in the lid.  It's nice being able to move it around in the smoke chamber also.

I'll be purchasing a second for reading meat temp.

With a Mav there is no need for a door therm, you can watch grate level temps from inside the house!

I was of the understanding that the probe for the Maverick thermometer was to be inseted in the meat

,No?

the maverick is great. i would check the temp of the gauge that came with your smoker. it might be right on.....if it is built into the door where it is a pain in the %&@ to get out. just open the door and leave open for a while.not in the sun...then find out what the outside temp is. that should be the same as the built in gauge....they are not always off that bad...but sometimes they are off in outerspace.

happy smoken.

Berto, which model of Mavrick thermometer do you have? The type that S2K9K is talking of is a Mavrick Remote themometer that has 2 probes~one for chamber temps and the other that goes in the meat

What's nice about the remotes is that you don't have to go outside to check you temps. You have the remote unit with you and the main unit at the smoker sends RF signals to the remote of what the chamber and food temps are.
