I acquired a new to me but old to the family Casa Q, predecessor to the Big Green Egg. I am going to restore the Casa Q and use it alongside my other grills. Take a look here:

http://www.smokingmeatforums.com/t/133452/bringing-home-an-old-family-friend-q-view#post_908406

There are a few things that I need to replace and since there are no longer parts, I am wondering if some of the parts from the BGE may work.

The most important part that I need to replace is the fire box. Mine is in three pieces, I may be able to wire them together, but that may only work for a bit. This firebox does not have support feet like the BGE's so it likely will fail just wired together. I am thinking that the firebox from the large BGE will fit. I would like to know actual width at top, and height. I know the specs say 18" at top and 14" height. I just want to make sure..

Second piece I don't have is the ceramic top that covered the chimney. It was on a pin and you just swiveled it to open or close. I know BGE uses a cast iron cap while cooking and a ceramic for storage. I am interested in using the cast iron cap. What is the ID of the cap? The OD of the chimney on the Casa Q is 5 3/8"+, but no more than 5 1/2".

Thanks for the help in advance!

Thanks Cromag,

I've been to the website and they have nice pictures but no specs on anything. I've called and they refer you to the "Local Dealer".  They have two for the town I live in, one of which has been closed for three years. The other doesn't have anything in stock to look at and they suggested I order direct.  That's why I posted for help from owners. BGE is pretty vague on everything, seem to have a good following though.

The iron and ceramic cap measure 5 3/4 (inside) across on mine..

Actually the iron cap with the adjustable vent used to be an accessory..

The ceramic cap was used to adjust temp by tilting it to allow more or less air out.

When I lived in Atlanta I was right around the corner from the importer/home office/retail outlet..

They cooked every Sat.

A few years ago the moved to a much larger building.

Craig,

Thanks its sounds like the cast iron top would work. Now I just need to find out if the firebox from the large egg will fit.

Large BGE firebox

3.5" from the bottom to the point where it bells out. 14" from the bottom of the BGE to the bottom of the grate/top of the firebowl. The top of the fire bowl is 18.25" outside diameter.

Thanks cromag that helps!!!

You may have better luck asking for the measurements on the XL or med boxes from BGE forums on their site. I couldn't find any other posts on dimensions

If I broke any forum rules posting this link my apologies
Yeah I signed up there yesterday, but I'm waiting on a moderators approval so I can post. I think that the measurements you gave for the large will work in the Casa Q.
