Hi, all! I'm from Manchester, MD, and I've always loved cooking outdoors. I'm 56, and I still don't have a smoker (yet

), but I use a 22 inch kettle grill with a grate that opens on the sides so I can easily add charcoal and wood chunks while smoking. (I like conventional grilling, indirect grilling, rotisserie cooking, campfire cooking, and low-and-slow smoking...it's all fun to me!)

My kettle did not come with a thermometer, but they make one that can be attached by drilling a hole through the lid, and it has a wing nut to hold it in place.

I really hadn't tried smoking anything until last summer when I tried a Boston Butt. It was a large cut: took 14 hours, and still could have gone another hour or two, but I was still happy with the results. The hardest thing for me is maintaining the low temperature when smoking, especially during the first hour, but I'm getting better at it. Maybe it's tougher since I'm using a kettle(?).

Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting more experienced at this!
