Hi everybody,

I'm obviously new here but have been a "newsletter guy" for several years now. i think Jeff's website almost ruined my (short at the time) marriage, but now my wife is involved and on board! she does great  things for someone who cant eat what she helps create. that leads me to why I'm here.

i need different ideas om things/ combos to smoke that don't contain protein (what she can not eat) and mostly, i need a good source for the logs or splits to smoke it with. i live in the south suburbs of Chicago (very near NW Indiana) and all i can find is hickory and mesquite logs at bass pro and cabelas.

     thanks everyone!!

Forgot, i have been smoking for over 3 years and use a Horizon Smokers 16" offset smoker. i have smoked brisket, steak, a NY strip "roast" ( not sure what to call it, but  it was 5# of uncut NY strip), burgers, meatballs (often), pork butt (often), crown roast of pork, pork loin, bacon, ribs (spare and back), chops, turkey, portabella, trout..... thats all i can think of right now, but the only epic fail (in my opinion) was the fish (too dry. only tried once) and the portabella (too smokey, wrong wood.). i have never had complaints about anything else (and i beg for constructive criticism).

Hey buddy, I'm new here as well.  I used to live somewhat south of you.  What kind of non-proteins are you looking for?   Corn on the cob, asparagus, whole garlic, beans, sauces, the list goes on.   I love throwing some corn on the smoker.  Doesn't take long and you get all those delicious, sugary juices from the corn.

As for wood, I would check the yellow pages, or go online and look up, "wood fuel" or "firewood supply" for places in your local area.  You can also order wood online from a number of places, but it requires planning ahead.

just looking for things people have tried as far as veggies or veggie combo dishes, she can have NO protien at all. kinda sucks cuz i could live on meat alone, but we work with what we have. as far as wood, ive checked with all sorts of tree people (i have family in the cutting business) and nobody sorts their stuff. also what i have found online seems expensive, but only have found a few so far. i need to search more. thanks for your input!! it all helps!

Maybe try Craigslist? Find a local landscaping business? A garden center? Heck, call your local fire dept. and ask those guys if they know where any firewood can be found.
Do you have any BBQ joints nearby or a pizza place that uses a brick oven? If so, give them a call and ask where they get their wood. Try to buy some from them if they seem cool.
Grocery stores, HD and Lowes often have chips and chunks, sometimes apple and cherry if you get lucky.
Don't give up the wood search! I know it can be very frustrating. Been there. But your hard work will pay off!

As for veggies, I've had success smoking carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, corn, beans, turnips and parsnips.
Stuffed peppers. Love them. Gonna throw some on the smoker now since you got me thinking about veggies
