Joe here from Long Island. Don't have a smoker yet. I tend to research everything to death before I get anything.

As I said in my first post I am looking for a smoker that is great in cold weather. I don't want to wait till spring. Willing to spend $150-$250, $300 tops. My favorite food and my first smoke would be pulled pork and ribs. Then sausage.

Hey Joe! One word, Propane!

I wholeheartedly believe that charcoal is the true spirit of smoking and electric is great for "set-it-and-forget-it", but I love the heat control propane smokers give me during the cold michigan winters. True they can run a little warm during the dog days of summer, but it's nothing a few simple mods can't fix. Here's a link to the SMF propane smokers. Just my .02

Welcome Joe. Glad you found us! As to which smoker. I guess your first decision will be gas, electric, charcoal, or stick burner. You should be able to find a good quality smoker in any of these in your budget. I know that doesn't narrow it down any, but the possibilities are almost unlimited! Feel free to ask questions.

It will be a gas smoker. Something like a Smoke Vault or from GOSM.

Thanks Dave, I will check out the e-course

The e-course is a good way to get started. Some good tips to be had....I live in Minnesota and use a Kamado kooker and a MES30. Both can handle the cold without issue. The electric is easier to control the heat when I make sausage since the heat is low 160° compared to smoking other meats 225° - 240°. The lump coal Kamado kooker is very effecient on fuel...I like using both units. Can't really I favor on over the other..I think everyone should have a few options. Whatever you decide to buy, learn how the machine works. You can make great bbq on any smoker you choose.....
