It says it's a shoulder, not Boston butt. Does it have a thick rind on it? I think it's what some call a picnic.

Hi I didn't remove It from the plastic yet, but IT does have a fat layer on top or bottom, I'm not sure if it is a rind, like on the whole shoulders. The supermarket had whole picnic shoulders for $1.49 lb. Their add said Boston Butt at $1.79 Lb. That is what I thought I was buying till I got home. Will know more once It is out of the plastic.

Thanks Dan

PS Once I saw the what I thought was the blade bone. I was under the impression that IT was Boston Butt. Unless it is not a blade bone.

OK ..It's rubbed and wrapped back in the fridge, on too the smoker tomorrow morning. So I'm guessing "IT" is NOT a Boston Butt.

Thanks Dan

Dan, once you smoke it and pull it you'll never know it's not a Boston!

As Martin said, still a good cut of meat.

It was just cut a little further down from the shoulder to include some of the arm bone.

Good meat.  Maybe a little more waste?

Smoke it and enjoy it.

Good luck and good smoking.

The front leg has a ball joint in it at the arm bone (humerous) and blade bone (scapula): http://www.virtualweberbullet.com/meatcharts_photos/porkskeletal.jpg    What you have there is a roast just above the arm bone and has a bit of the arm/blade bone ball joint included.  The butcher should have cut just a bit higher up (black line on linked chart) but what the heck - it'll be a great meal the way it is.

Getting back to the bone pic, is that a blade bone?
