Hey all. I've been hard at work both reading a ton of stuff on here trying to learn about smoking meats and stuff, as well as building myself a UDS. I got lucky and had one of the warehouse guys at work give me a BRAND NEW/NEVER USED 55 gallon drum. It has a removable lid but no bungholes. After reading about and watching a ton of these builds online, I decided to get started. Let me know if I did anything wrong. Pics will come as soon as I can.

I started by deciding how exactly I wanted to build mine. I changed a few things up for convenience as well as looks. I also had some materials(carriage bolts) that could be used for the build already so I used them instead of buying new. I decided to use three ball valves instead of nipples for maximum adjustability as well. These three valves are all mounted on 24" nipples that run up the side of the drum instead of being at the bottom where i'd have to bend over.

So after deciding on a layout, I drilled three 1" holes two inches up from the bottom of the drum. Then drilled three holes directly inline with those holes for my grill grate bolts and my bolts for the mounting hardware and handles. Once all the holes were drilled, I took that sucker outside and burned all the paint off with my weed burner. Sanded it down with my grinder and slapped some high temp black grill paint on it.

Then the other night I started putting all the hardware on and she started to look like a smoker. Almost done now but still need to get some of the stuff to make the charcoal basket. Can't wait to finish this project and start smoking. Thanks for all the info y'all put on this site. A new guy like me needs all the help I can get.

This is the before picture. It's the only one I have on my phone. I'll take some pictures of where I'm at as soon as I get home.

Ok so I already posted the before picture of the drum. Here is where I'm currently at in the build. Not much left to do. Just need to get a few thing to finish it up.

I forgot to ask last night. What should I do for an exhaust on the lid? I've seen all kinds of different things. Some people have a 2" black nipple smokestack, some have just a 2" hole, some have a bunch of 1" holes. That's about the only thing I haven't thought of yet. Can someone direct me on this?? Thanks.

I would make a 2" or 3" hole. One thing you might want to do is have a cap for the hole so when your done smoking you can close it off .

That way it will put the coals out and can reuse them. Also could get a weber lid or a cheap off brand lid (like the one on mine) then when

your done smoking just put the flat lid back on (without any holes) to put the coals out.

Looks awesome!  That chrome is really contrasting nicely.  What type of paint did you use?  Is that a Flat sheen?  I used semi-gloss, but I love how yours is looking.  I may need to reconsider on my next one...

Thanks for posting pics!

It's rattlecan high temp grill paint. I think it's rustoliem. I'll double check when I get home from work tonight.

If you could find A lid with bung holes and plugs thats all you really need. Plus the second small bung hole allows a little more fine tuning. It is nice to have a weber lid if you do a big turkey in there.but if yours is outside like mine is the solid lid is great to keep the rain out.

I found that the bung hole on oil drum lids is perfect to keep the right exaust and flow. if it is real cold out I open the small bung too for a little extra air draw to the coals. If you were to get one of those lids that is.

Ok y'all wanted to see it when it's done. Well here she is. Seasoned all night long at about 400 for almost 12 hours. I already have my first good to go on it ready to go. Started off easy and went with a fattie. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Thanks man. Made up the fattie last night and it was yummy. I did fight with temps going way low and then after I had to basically relight the coals the temps were too high. I need to spend the money on the charcoal and just practice it I think.
