I have a question for Brinkman SNP owners?

Is it ok to use the top grill rack in the firebox for lump/charcoal or wood to burn instead of using the lower charcoal rack.I am just curious if it will matter.I am trying to understand to create better heat to enter smoke grill chamber.I have not made a modified charcoal box yet and will soon to help out with the heat from the firebox.

Thank's SMF...
