Kitchen Fires No. 1 in New Report
U.S. Fire Administration sent this bulletin at 10/10/2012 11:22 AM EDT

In recognition of Fire Prevention Week, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the U.S. Fire Administration are providing new statistics on fires in American homes and urging consumers to install smoke alarms in their homes and check to make sure all smoke alarms are working properly. It is also vitally important to develop and practice a family fire escape plan. The top cause of fires in the home is cooking equipment, accounting for an estimated 147,400 or 40 percent of residential fires each year between 2008 and 2010. Cooking was also associated with the largest percentage of fire-related injuries, an estimated average 27.4 percent or 3,450, in the home.

some people should eat out more...............sure helps me with job security!

Well, it only makes sense that cooking in the kitchen is a major cause of house fires...I mean, folks don't usually have an open flame and the like in the bathroom, right??? :icon_eek:

Anyway, PLEASE have a smoke detector in every room, I mean it, the sooner you are aware that there's smoke...the better!!!!

Always keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen and near the furnace, water heater and the like...... as well as every level of the house.

If you have a multi-story house, get some chain ladders for easy escape!!!!

Keep an old charged cell phone in the car so you can call 911 if you're forced to escape from the house without being able to call for help!

You can't be too cautious when it comes to fire!!!!

I should have added....I've seen way too many fires...it scares me to death...always be prepared for a fire in the kitchen...be especially prepared and know what to do if there's a grease fire at the stove so you won't panic and do something crazy!!!!

When I was working with the profoundly disabled at a home that houses 4 folks with 24 hour intensive assisted care...a couple of girls were fixing dinner for the residents when a grease fire broke out...making a long story short...the girls panicked...grabbed the hot pan that was on fire and headed for the door....spilling hot flaming grease on the rug and such on the way out...leaving a flaming trail and making things much worse than they needed to be!!!! Thank God no one was hurt, luckily with the help of fire extinguishers the fire was eventually put out, it could have easily ended in death and disaster!!!
