Hi guys. I would like to think of maybe painting my UDS I am gonna build the colors of my local university and use it not only at home but also to tailgate with on game day. My question is simple. If I wanted to cook something that required several hours to cook (longer than the time we had before the game started ect.), and didn't want to get to the parking lot at 5 am (wife and kids lol) could I start the smoker either the night before or very early in the morning, then load it up, shut all the intakes, secure the lid (I have a band style lid), secure the smoker in bed of truck, and safely travel 60 miles to the tailgate spot with meat 1/2 way done? I have been thinking about the safety of this. Even if I could do it safely, would a draft be created from the air rushing around the barrel that would super heat the inside? Has anyone ever attempted this?

I think if I were to do it I would buy a junker truck for a couple hundred to transport it. Not sure insurance would cover a car fire from hauling a load of fire. Lol

cmwr, morning....

Even if it was legal, and you had a $10 million liability insurance policy (just in case a fire started anywhere in the State and you got the blame) ..... Ask your wife what she thinks of the idea.....

I know what Bride would say to that idea.....  I know what she would call me....

"You want to transport burning material 60 miles to a "FOOTBALL GAME" ?????"  And the tirade would go on and on and on......

Hope you can see the humor intended here....

I think i like the 5am in the parking lot idea better than transporting a burning smoker.

Transporting a burning uds could put a whole new definition to drafting your smoker. For some reason i could see this going wrong on so many levels...

The best idea would be to have two smokers, one to cook on at home, and one unlit in the back of the truck. Half cook you food at home, then get to the game, unload and light your other smoker to finish the job. I mean a UDS is cheap enough to build and if your doing one, the second one at the same time would be pretty simple.

I got to thinking about this post while I was outside working on my build and................I realized just how stupid this sounded. I really do have common sense. I just wondered about transporting a fully sealed off unit. But honestly I got to having visions of corn fields burning along my journey.

So the idea is completely nixed forever. Sorry to sound so stupid here. I really am not lol.

Just finish your cook an hour before you want to leave wrap in towels and into a cooler to transport and serve it up at the game

cmwr, we all get those brain farts every now and then regret we opened our mouths. I do that almost daily.

Scarbelly, that would be the easy way, but I think the whole idea of painting the UDS with the school colors and having it at the tailgating was what his interest was. Plus the smell of the cook going on would absolutely add to the ambiance.

Tailgating wouldn't be the same if you don't do the cooking on site.

It was two or three years back I was going down a freeway and there was a grass fire every mile or two.

I figured some kind of firebug or terrorist at work in our agricultural area.

Couple days later it was on the news.  Somebody transporting a barbecue in the back of their pickup.

Go figger?

Good luck and good smoking.

I would CHEAT! Partially cook your food to a safe temperature wrap in foil and towels, place in a cooler, head to the tailgating event fire up the UDS and throw the meat on, nobody will know the difference. Bring some lump for a quicker start up.

If you tell anyone I said this I'll deny it!

Hmmmmm...... transporting a lit smoker in the bed of a pickup truck?

Only if you have someone to follow your truck with a video camera.  This would be a instant YouTube classic and falls into the "hey y'all, watch this" category....   So, no, it's not a good idea IMO.

We know your not, but a guy can dream about that entertainment. Although the other guy who posted about it did say he was still thinking about some testing on that subject.

What happened to the thread with the truck driver who wanted to mount a smoker on his rig so he could smoke on the road? That would be a great youtube too!
